.A motor-car travelling to Napier with a bridal couple went over a bank at Wharerata Hills in a fog at night. The bridegroom sustained a dislocated hip, and was conveyed to the Wairoa Hospital. Tlie driver had a rib fractured. The car rolled over several times and fell 50ft.
The life of the mascot of H.M.S. New Zealand has not been a long one in Auckland. The bull dog named “Pelorus Jack” dropped dead 3 T esterday afternoon while being led out for exercise (says Thursday's Auckland “Star”) Viscount Jelliooe presented this bull dog to tlie citizens of Auckland when he visited this port. Since the girt was received the dog has been carefully looked after in Albert Park, where he was an object of interest to visitors. ; The Government has decided that school children who visit the nearest centres to see the Prince of Wales, and cannot, by reason of the train arrangements, return home tlie same day, may be granted tickets permitting them to travel to a centre one day, remain j there on the following day to see the j Prince, and return home on the third | day. Only as many children as can be ! satisfactorily billeted will be given tick- j ets, and if the rolling stock available is not sufficent to carry all such children, I the number to be taken from each I school must ho fixed by the Education j Board.
The Minister of Education, the Hon C. J. Parr,’ in congratulating the parents of the scholars attending the new school at Hastings East warned them against paying the exorbitant prices now asked for land. Ho quoted one dairy farm in another district having recently been purchased at £IOO per acre, and this had no fewer than seven mortgages inscribed on its title deeds. The people should not lose their senses because of the high prices ruling for produce. It was the same, lie said, after every war. He expressed a hope that people would remember this, and refran from indulging in reckless land speculation, endangering the progress of a prosperous district.
