To the People of Westland, — The Great War is over and the time lias come for the people of Westland to set up a Memorial to the Men and Women who have.fallen in the common cause of National defence and National preservation. Many have lost relatives—all have lost friends, and it is a duty cast upon us to see that an enduringl monument should be erected commemorative of the sacrifices made. They died in Gallipoli,; in Egypt, in France, in Belgium, and on the high seas where the war and all that it entailed, was waged. We can, at least, record their heroism and death in a monument to stand for all time. The intention is to erect a Cenotaph—a monument erected to one buried elsewhere—that will be not only a visible symbol in which to enshrine the memory of the fallen, but which will be, also, for those who come after, a message and an inspiration.. In accordance with the popular wish the Committee which has been entrusted with the work desires that the funds for the memorial—a sum of not less than £1,500 —should be obtained by voluntary subscription and without recourse to the ordinary method of raising public funds. It has been decided to make a special collection throughout the towns and district.of Westland from April 15th to /April 25th (Anzac Day). The lists will close on the latter date, which is the occasion fixed for laying the foundation stone of the memorial. It is felt that the people of Westland will enter into this matter in the right spirit, and will mark their love and gratitude by giving freely and liberally to the fund. The public are asked to bear the collecting period in mind, and their co-operation is looked for to provide the amount by Anzac Day, when all are invited to be present at the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the Westland memorial to the heroic fallen. Inviting heads of households, employers, directors, officials and all controlling or employing a staff to make this appeal as widely known as possible, and asking their assistance in securing practical help from one and all, We are, on behalf of the GeneraTCommittee, G. Teachers in charge of schools have been invited to make a special collection from their pupils to the Fund. The monej will be kept separate and earmarked for engraving the names of the Fallen Soldiers and Nurses on the ow. of Remembrance to be fixed in the centre of the Cenotaph.
