OBITUARY. CHRISTCHURCH, April 9. Obituary.—Mrs G. G. Stead, aged 67 years.. WITHOUT A DOCTOR. PLIGHT OF CHATHAM ISLANDERS. CHRISTCHURCH, April 5 Dr G. TI. Gibson, who has been medical officer and stipendiary magistrate on the Chatham Island for the past four years, has relinquished these positions, and has returned to the mainland. Dr Rodgers, who arrived recently to replace Dr Gibson has also decided to return to New Zealand. The islanders will now be without the services of a doctor.

A SERIOUS ATTACK. WELLINGTON, April 9. Early this morning two women, Mrs Caroline Cooper, and an unmarried sister, Annie Christina Skjotli, living together in Tasman Street, were attacked by a man with a bar of iron, or a stock. Both were seriously injured and removed to the Hospital. The police issued a warrant and arrseted a returned soldier suspected of the crime.

A hick of huildngs comprising empty dwelling house, the offices of Dalgety and Co., a shop occupied by Wentherdon, and the Town Hall, were completely destroyed •
