N.Z. RUGBY UNION. WELLINGTON, March 25 A meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union was held this evening. The South 'African Rugby Union’s replies to the invitaton to send a team to New Zealand this year stated that it is impossible, but the Union will favour ably consider a tour for next year. Hie

next season. It was suggested that enough clubs played Rugby in Canada and California to make the visit worth while, and even in New York and Boston. A reply will be sent that, if the expenses were guaranteed, the New Zealand Union would not look for any profit. , Tlie question of the amateur status was referred to tlie general meeting oj delegates." A letter was received from the Olympic Council for New Zealand, pointing out that New Zealand, having been granted separate representation on tlie International Olympic Council, any
points won by New Zealand representatives at the International Olympiad would now count to New Zealand, instead of as heretofore, tq Australasia. The New Zealand Rugby Union was ■invited to affiliate with the Council and co-operate with it, in sending New Zealand representatives to the seventh Olympiad, to be held at Antwerp in August next. Tlie New Zealand contestants must leave the Dominion not later than April next. Tlie chairman and Mr Howe were appointed the Union’s representatives on tlie Olympic Council.
Proceedings in St Mary’s Club rooms last evening proved most interesting and instructive. Tlie evening was de voted to speeches on poets and authors. Some of which were as follows:—Robert Burns (G. McCullough), Thomas Grey (W. McCarthy), Thomas Moore (J. V. Ward); Henry Lawson (P. J McCarthy). Those present greatly ap predated the efforts put forwaid b\ each speaker. The Club will meet again on April 13th when each meinhe? will be asked to speak as a eandidat; for Parliamentary or local municipal honours.
