Another disastrous lire broke out at 11.3 D last night at the rear of Perran’s bakery business in the Main Street. Ihe whole block, and the old wooden block adjoining, owned by Hennessy were destroyed. Perran’s block was occupied by Mattar (tobacconist), Perran’s shop and dwelling, marble bar and Ryder’s book establishment. Hennessy’s buildings were occupied by Hearsman, (tailor), Dudron (fruiterer), and 0. M. Ross (drapery business) iu all seven business premises. The Red Shield Club, detached by about 20ft. from Hennessy’s block was saved.
Stocks from the various shops were salvaged. The only fire fighting appliance is a small single cylinder chemical engine, which despite the splendid efforts of the brigade, was totally inadequate to cope with the conflagiation. , Perran’s building was insured for £1,500. The other insurances are not yet ascertainable. The fipe was one of the most disastrous experienced. The cause of the outbreak is a mystery.
