A LABOUR PROTEST. (Received this day at 11.25 a.ra.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Executive of the Labour Pnrty passed a motion condemning the lavish expenditure in connection with tlie Prince of Wales’ visit, and asking la hour members to refrain from enlisting in naval and militar yforces, as a protest against Mr Cook’s refusal to receive a deputation from the Council on the question of a war gratuity to the mercantile marine.
PARTICULARS OF TARIFF. MELBOURNE, This Day
In the House of Representatives, Mr Massey Greene in introducing the Tariff Bill, said the outstanding lesson of the war left no option but to adopt such a policy as would ensure Australia against the commercial bleeding to ivhich it was subjected. Explaining fhe bill, lie said it provided f*>r substantially increased preference to Britain and permits reciprocal tariff relationship with other parts of the Empire >vhich may be granted the United King-dom-preferential rate, either in whole or in part.' The Bill prohibits reciprocal relationship with any Dominion where the economic conditions are lower than prevail in Australia. The bill also provides for the extension of the intermediate tariff to any country with which reciprocal trade relationships are arranged, and protects hew industries by providing an additional duty to prevent dumping. The number of new duties totals 95. Ip all thetse cases in the last tariff, the importations from United Kingdom were free. Provision is also made for a clefprrpd duty, which will become operative at some future date, with the objcet of giving an opportunity of establishing industries in Australia by the time the deferred duty operates. If this is not done, the minister is empowered to postpone the imposition ot deterred duty. The new duties come into operation to-day, PAPA’S GOVERNOR. MELBOURNE, This Day.
