fpyn punas association .—oorvniGnT.; AN INQUEST. TAUMARUNUI, March 22. At the inquest on W. J. Hunter, of Pipiriki, who fell into the Ohura river at Tokirima while riding a horse, the evidence showed that deceased and a mate had been drinking. The other man missed Hunter and found his horse riderless on the road. The body was recovered later, and it was found that the neck was broken. A verdict of accidental death was returned. A SUICIDE. MAR-TON, March 22. An elderly married man, Richard Adams, was found hangng to a tree at Marton Junction on Saturday. He had been in ill-health for some time. At the inquest a verdict of suicide was returned.
UNDESIRABLE CHARACTERS. WELLINGTON, March 22. There are a considerable number of undesirable characters in this district at the present time. A man who was returning from the Opaki races had his pocket picked of £lB during a rush for scats at the train. Other cases of theft have been made known to the police. Gambling goes on without hindrance in the race trains. During one card game in the train from Opaki, one of the players decamped with £SO belonging to another player. In some of tlse towns, it is stated, it is not advsable for women to be out alone at night, especially in unfrequented streets. CATHOLIC CHURCH BURNT. WATPAWA, This Day. The Catholic Church was gutted by fire early this morning. The flames had obtained a good hold when discovered, and travelled rapidly. The fire started in the sanctuary, but the cause is unknown. The building was insured for £550, and furnishings f°r £175 in the Standard Office, and Organ for £375 in the Norwich Union Office. The loss is estimated at about £2,000.
