The ratepayers yesterday sanctioned a loan for £35,000 for underground drainage. The New Zealand Clydesdale Horse Society delegates met here last evening, and decided to make an annual distribu tion of four gold medals for Clydesdale competition at the various A. and P. shows in the Dominion.
AN EDUCATION QUESTION. WELLINGTON, This Day
At present, subject to the approval of the Education Department a national I scholarship may be tenable at jirivate secondary schools. A communication from the Auckland Education Board was considered at a meeting yesterday, and this expressed a southern Board’s disapproval of the practice, and asked for an endorsement of its attitude by the Wellington Board. The Chairman said the attitude of the Auckland Board had his approval, and he moved accordingly. The motion was passed. A motion was carried that for the future tlie Board should import its own building material', ironmongery, paint, etc., as an economic step.

A.sad fatality occurred at the Omana sports’ social yesterday evening, when Mrs Hedley-Kenne, wife of the crack rifle-shot, whilst dancing, faulted and expired. Tlie deceased leaves a husband and three little children.
ARRESTED MAN BEFORE COURT • AUCKLAND, This l)av.. At the Police Court to-day, IV” Dunn was charged with the murder of \ugust Braitliwaite. He was arrested for theft from Ponsonhv, .and remanded till Friday. The proceedings were remarkably brief. A PRACTICAL PROTEST. NAPIER, This Day. The headmasters of four of the. Napier schools have advised the pupils to attend school bootless and stockingless as a protest against tlie cost of living.
A WOMAN’S BODY FOUND. PALMERSTON N., This Day
Tlie body of a married woman, named Webby, aged about 45 years, was found early ibis morning with her throat cut, in an unformed street between R.uahine Street and Fitzrov .St. The body was lying under the fence. There was no instrument nihout, and no marks on the body. All signs point to murder. The bod v was removed to
the morgue. An inquest will be held. The deceased lived with her husband in Manson street. There is one child, a girl about nine years.
