OTIRA TUNNEL
PREPARING FOR THROUGH TRAFFIC. According to Mr 11. W. Holmes, Umler-Sccretary ol Public Works, and ; Engineer-in-Chicf, it is expected that the Arthur’s Pass tunnel will be eom- | pleted in about eighteen months—that 1 is, tin* remainder of the excavating and the lining of the tunnel. Tenders for the electrical equipment Tor the operation of the trains through the tunnel close in June next, and the successful tenderer is to complete his contract in eighteen months. The Public M orks Department is planning to have the rails laid and the line through the tunnel ballasted and ready lor operation contemporaneously with the completion of the electrical equipment contract. In the meantime, a steam plant tor the generating of electricity will be used, and will be available as a stand-by i» the event of a satisfactory hydro-elec-trical scheme being decided upon.
