WAR RELIEF FUNDS.

DARGAVILLE, This Day

A meeting of Dargaville Branch of i Auckland Provincial Patriotic War Relief Association, was held last evening for the purpose of bearing Mr Long, representative of the Auckland branch. The Mayor (Mr R. E. Hornblow) moved the following resolution, which was seconded by Mr J. N. Hayes and carried unanimously—That this Committee strongly protests against the proposed nationalisaton and centralisation of patriotic funds, and affirm the desirability of the funds raised in Auckland pro- j vince being used exclusively in the in- | 'terests of soldiers who enlisted from the j Auckland military province district, j and further that we pledge ourselves to j do all in our power to strengthen the . hands of the Provincial Executive in ! opposing the proposal to nationalise or centralise the funds of the Provincial Association.

PROFITEER TRIBUNAL. AUCKLAND, This Day

The Auckland Tribunal appointed to enquire into complaints of profiteering, met yesterday. Statements were made that certain business firms made the practice of holding in hand credit balances clue to purchasers, whose money had been forwarded with the order for goods. It was • also alleged that attempts were made by unauthorised committees to fix standard prices for purchases from producers. These matters will receive due consideration. MR MACK’S OPINION. The English tennis players who were to have been accorded a civic reception at Christchurch to-dav arrived at Wellington by the Moeraki last night, too late to proceed South. On landing at Wellington wharf at 9.30. p.m., they were met bv Mr H. M. Gore, President of the'New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. Mr J. C. Peacock, one of their opponents, was also at the wharf with other members of the Association. The English players go to Christchurch bv the Moeraki this evening.

A FATAL ACCIDENT. AUCKLAND. This Day. Jeremiah Patrick Jones, when cycling, touched a horse driven in a trap by" T. M. Stephens. The bicycle became entangled with the harness atid the horse fell on Jones, who was picked up unconscious and died in the hos_ pital from a fractured skull. Tie was a laborer, married with two children. MR MASSEY OPERATED ON. WELLINGTON, This Day.

Hon. W. F. Massey underwent an operation on his neck to-day in a private hospital. The medical report states that'the operation was entirely successful, and that Air Massey’s condition is quite satisfactory. It is expected that Air Alassev will be hack at his duties in a few weeks.
