HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, March 12th

The Council met fit 8 p.m. Present: Messrs G. A. Perry, (Mayor), H. M. Coulson, N. AVarren, F. McGregor, A. Parkhill, J. King, J. J. Breeze, and G. H. Blank.

An apology was made for the absence of Mr H. Thompson. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE From Canterbury Automobile Association expressing thanks for attention of Council to repairs to road at Cemetery Hill etc., —Received. From Canterbury Progress League asking co-operation in urging on the completion of the East and West- Coast railway.—Received; to be given effect to.

From Westland War Memorial convey ing proposals for war memorial; further stating it had resolved to erect a cenotaph on Cass Square as a war memorial, and asking for permission of the Council to erect it-on the site proposed. —Received; site approved and request for use of Council’s staff in preparing for laying of foundation thereof granted.

From Westland County Council conveying resolutions agreed upon at conference of local bodies, for the cleansing out of Maliinapua Creek; that attention be given to the paper read by Mr Langford on electric power, and that the matter be brought under the notice of Mr Birks ,electrical engineer on his approaching visit; recommending that a loyal address be presented to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and that the Borough and County Councils jointly bear the expense of the visit. —Receiv ed. Mr Blank thought it would he more serviceable to ask the Tourist Department for a vote to make a road to hake Maliinapua, which would be far more useful than the clearing out of the

creek. Mr McGregor was in favour of the Council approving of the work of cleaning out the Creek. Mr Coulson said it was a matter of great importance to improve the beau-

tiful Maliinapua Creek stream, and it behoved them to carry out the suggested work. He seconded the resolution of Mr McGregor for approval. The Mayor said the Council had no power to vote money for work outside

f the Borough. Mr King said Maliinapua Creek was valuable asset that they should cnleavour to improve to the utmost. He

also favoured the road being completed, as it would be of decided advantage to the residents along the line and would enable Maliinapua to be visited

easily. Mr Breeze supported the carrying out of the work.

The Mayor suggested that the motion be carried, subject to the Council bavin,, power to pay the money involved. The Clauso was agreed to subject to the Mayor’s suggestion as to the legality of the payment. The remaining clauses of the letter were approved. From Municipal Band asking the Council to take the necessary steps to have the new silver instruments vested in the Council—Received; referred to the Borough Solicitor to take the necessary steps to give effect to the request, a half yearly check of the instruments to be made. From Westland County Council stating the repairs to Maliinapua Creek bridge had been completed at a cost of £135 13s 10d,-tlie Borough’s share there of being £67 11s lld.-Received and referred” to Finance Committee for pay-

ment. , From Park and Murdoch endorsing copv of application for tramway for Kanicri Sawmill Coy., and asking tor approval of Council to the application -Received. Consideration deferred till Monday evening at 7.30 o’clock. REPORTS. The Treasurer reported receipts £44< 12s 8d; payments £335 7s 4d; debit bn - ante £3OO 12s sd.—Received. The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to £320 5s 6d; that the salaries of i permanent staff be increased by 10 /o and that of the casual labour by Is per dav • that the payment to the night-soil contractor be increased to £2B per month.—Received and adopted. From Manager of Abattoirs reporting for month of February there were examined 9 cows, 64 bullocks, 156 sheep, 227 lambs, 2 pigs, 10 calves Fees foi period £62 15s 6d.-Receiyed.
