(Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) WASHIGTON, March 10. Senator Lodge, debating in the Senate, Mr Wilson’s letter to Mr Hitchcock, said it was unfortunate that Mr
Wilson declared the French militaristic element was defeated at the Peace COll- - now had regained control. The reference to presidential distrust of diplomats, as capable of working for the world’s salvation, was equally unhappy while his allusions to Italy as a country, merely seeking their own selfprotection. The Senate similarly readopted by 37 to 29, a reservation pro riding for equality of voting power in the League of Nations.
PREPARING AGAINST TURKEY. (Received this dav at 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, March 11. The Supreme Council completed many details for military and naval action against Turkey, including the * occupation of strategic points in Asiatic and European Turkey.
NO PROGRESS. (Received this day at 8.40 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 11
The “Times” Washington correspondent says the work of drafting a compromise to Article 10 is not progressing favourably, and many discouraged sectors have expressed the hopelessness of reaching a compromise which will be acceptable to the whole Senate. It is felt that the Republicans, as well as n small number of Democrats who are dissatisfied with Mr Wilson’s attitude, are now attempting to fasten the rejection cf the Treaty upon Mr Wilson. MODIFIED RESERVATION. (Received this day at-10.20 ?.m.» WASHINGTON, March 9Republican leaders assented to a modification of Article 10, placing with Congress not only the power of providing military and naval forces, but reserving tp Congress the right of declaring war.
