Friday and Saturday are declared meatless days. Government reduces tlie importation of cereals, frozen meat, sugar and bacon, and a reduction of the bread ration to 450 grammes, except to manual workers, who get five hundred. It is expected to effect a saving of two thousand million of lire.

The Silver Queen machine is delayed | at Livingstone owing to heavy rain. THE PARIS STRIKE. (Received This Day at 1.5. p.m.) PARIS February 29. The General Federation of Labour lias announced it supports the railway strike. Many mobilised railwaymen failed to respond to notices calling them. In view of the General Confederation assisting tio control the strike it is regarded as probable that the strike will soon extend to other unions. Government 3s confident of its nihility to control the situation, and is taking stringent precautions to maintain order. A large number continue to volunteer to maintain the food supply and transport system. Police raided the office of the newspaper, “Libertaire.” Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the author of articles wherein he was urging 1920 conscripts and railway men to rebel, desert and pillage. LONDON, February 27. The “Times’ 1 ’ (Paris dorrespondent .states the gravity of the strike situation hourly deepens. Both sides are sitting in continuous conclave. It is rumoured that the strike leaders are in communication with Lenin, Trotsky an dother leading Russian Bolsheviks, but the chances of a revolution are considered small. The French people are solid and are unlikely to risk what they have for anything the Bolsheviks may offer. The crisis does not surprise anvone closely following the results of the last election. The present position is the direct outcome of the khaki wave, by which the most daring Extremists were excluded from Parliament and are now forced to adopt unconstitutional revolutionary measures.
