WFA AiND UJLIT, -KAXAS) (.Urey Argus. )

A deadlock occurred at the Stdl water railway construction worn yesterday morning, some 35 ol the men employed there returning to Greyniouin as a protest against the conditions under which they were asked to work. Inquiries were made by an “Argus’ representative, and in conversation with one of tile men who ret used to start work under the prevailing terms lie learned tho cause of the deadlock. It appears that when the men were engaged, no mention was made of how they would fare in wet weather. In consequence of the lengthy spell of dry weather this point was not ooutested, until yesterday morning. It appears that when the men arrived at Still water yesterday morning they were informed iby the gangers that unless they cared to work in the rain they would receive no pay for time lost. The men refused to accept these terms and returned to their homes. The wages paid by, the Public Works Department is 12/- per day, and it was understood by the men that this would include wet and dry weather. The men in question held a meeting yesterday afternoon appointed a deputation to \Vait on the inspector, with the request that better provision be made. It is understood that the inspector promised to place the men’s representations before the bead of his department and would acquaint the men with the decision arrived at. The men ..thereupon decided to resume work, pending a reply to their representations before the head of his department and would acquaint the men with the decision arrived at. The men thereupon decided to resume work, pending a reply to their representations.
