HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 27th. Tlie Council met at 8 p.m. Present —Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), G. H. Blank, J. King, F. McGregor, H. A. Thompson, N. Warren. Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs Wood, Couison, Breeze and Parkhill The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and the outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Kanieri Power Ltd. accepting conditions for supply of water service. From Public Works Department stat-
ing the power license to the Kanieri Power Ltd. had been granted.—Received. From Mayor of Greymoutb in regard to visit of Prince of Wales and notifying conference at Greymoutb.—Received; Mr McGregor thought the capital of Westland should not be ignored, if the Prince of. Wales was to visit the Coast. A strong protest .should be sent to the Government. Mr King seconded. The Mayor said the Premier bad promised to do wliat lie could to arrange for the Prince to visit Hokitika and he thought it would be just, as well to leave tlie matter in the hands of Mr Massey. The Mayor’s suggestion was adopted. From Paroa School Committee thank-
ing tlie Council for the use of Cass Square for the annual picnic.—Received. From Westland County Council forwarding particulars of the cost of administering the licensing act to 31st. December.—Received and Council’s quota passed for payment. From N.Z. Welfare League forwarding suggestion for a conference of local bodies and labor representatives regarding the rate of wages.—Received. Mr Warren thought no action was necessary. On Mr McGregor’s suggestion consideration of the letter was deferred. From Jas Kelly and 18 others protesting against any action being taken in Mahinapua Creek which would injure
tlicir land or jeopardise tlie whitebait industry.— Received • Mr Warren supported the view of tlie complaint made, and said the cause of the trouble was the sawdust nuisance from adjacent mills which tended to block the stream to navigation. He moved that the Council do its utmost to protect the interests likely to be affected. The Mayor suggested that the letter be referred to the delegates of the Council appointd to report on tlie whole subject. Mr Warren accepted the suggestion of the Mayor, and the Council adopted the course outlined. REPORT. The Treasurer reported receipts £l3l 8s Id; expenditure £l3 0 8d; Debit balance Borough Fund £ll2 17s 9d.—
Received. The Finance Committee recommended the passing of the accounts as schcd. Hied, total £353 15s 6d.—Adopted. OY HR SHIRTS REPORT. I have the honour to submit the followin'' report on work done during the past month. The drain at the foot of the Ceme tery Hill was completed during the month. While working in the vicinity wo cut down the gorsc and blackberry in Spencer Street. The drain was also cleaned out to Sewell Street. Ihe approach to the Abattoir has been improved by the cutting down of the gorse and blackberry between the Rail-
way line and the main road. One man has been constantly employed cutting the blackberry and cleaning the drains in various streets in the Borough. 'Hie water supply has also requned a "ood deal of attention during the month owing to the large quantities of water used during the prevailing spell of line weather. The footpaths that were broken up during the laying of the Telephone Cable have been repaired and the line laid down with asphalt. In Sowell Street between Hamilton St., and Gibson Quay we have relaid the footpaths with asphalt we are also continuing the work on the Gibson Quay footptlis as soon as the work of repairing this block is completed the whole work will receive a top dressing. During the month one extraordinary water connection has been laid from your water supply. Tlie usual maintenance works have ! also been attended to during the month. —Received. Mr Blank suggested that the pipe line track from the lake to the reservoir be cleared of overgrowth. The Mayor suggested the work might be done by contract, Mr -Thompson moved that the Overseer be empowered to have the work done. Mr Blank second, ed. Carried. • Mr McGregor raised the question of a Public Works Committee report. Mr Blank said a. meeting of the Committee had been called and the two members who attended bad nothing to repot t. The matter then dropped. A tender of £lO from A'. Aitken for the purchase of the oat crop on Cass gquare was accepted, after a discussion in regard to the Square generally. Mr King moved that arrangements be made with the Racing Club for-the use of the mower to cut the grass 'regularly. The Mayor thought the balance of tile Square should bo ploughed, and a good turf ensured ioi the whole ground. The Council rose at 8.35. p.m.
