£25,000 FOR ROYAL COLONIAL INSTITUTE. !

LONDON, Dec. 23. The munificent contribution of £25,100 has been made to the Jubilee Building Fund of the Royal Colonial Institute, Nortlvumberland-avenue AV.C., through its president, the Duke of Connaught, by Mr Hugh R. Denison, a leading citizen of New South Wales and principal proprietor of the Sydney Sun. The gift has been made by the, donor “as a° life fellow of the institute, and believing in its value as a means ol strengthening the threads which con. nect the various parts of our great Empire together.” Mr Hugh R. Denison, who is » remarks ble man and is prominent in the business life of Sydney, has for long been a generous supporter of movements designed to strengthen the bonds of the Empire. He gave £IO,OOO towards an (AjustraJinh gift battleship for the Royal Navy when Germany’s menace became dear. This was converted into a fund for the construction of an Australian Naval College. Mr Denison was the principal financial contributor to the syndicate which enabled Sir Douglas Mnwson to explore the Antarctic, and the founder ol the Australian War Chest Fund, which raised large funds for comforts for the Australian troops. He has subscribed largely to the Australian War Loans and the Australian Red Cross, the Anzac Memorial Fund, and other patriotic funds.. He founded the United Cable Service (Australasia) to assure Australia of a plentiful service of Imperial and foreign news. Mr Denison was a delegate from the Sydney Chamber of Commerce to the London Conference in 1!>12, and is a director of many Australian industrial companies. He sat for some time lor North Adelaide in the South Aus’ralian J louse of Assembly. At his stud farm he bred some very successful racehorses, and with the famous Poseidon won the Melbourne Cup, the V.R.C. Derby, and the Caulfield Cup (twice). -
