REDWING V. CANN. FAIR MARGIN OF POINTS. WANGANUI, February 27.. Considerable interest was taken iu the meeting of R. Redwing (Greymouth) Bst 91 bs., and J. Ginn (Wanganui, 9st Bilbs., iu a contest of six 3minute rounds at His Majesty’s Theatre to-niglit. This was one of the preliminaries to the Tracey-PooleV fight.
Redwing won on points by a failmargin.
TRiACEY BEATS POOLEY. In the professional contest, Tracey beat Pooley on points. The Aucklander shaped well up to ninth round, when Tracey commenced to pile on the points and ran out the winner after the full fifteen rounds' had gone. It was a good clean boat. BLACKBALL ASSOCIATION. SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT. Wluit was universally claimed as the best amateur tournament yet held on the AVest Coast eventuated iu Mandl’s Hall, Blackball, last night, when the pick of the Coast’s amateurs, from the bantam division to the heavies, met in a series of contests, which were both of interest to the spectators and satisfactory to the Association officials. A crowded house greeted the various contests, and the evening’s sport reached a high state of enthusiasm. Mr Minshin officiated as referee, and his decisions were met with general satisfaction. The surprise of the evening was the win of Burns over Garvey. The former is a neu -comer to local boxing, but his ringcraft was worthy of a veteran, and his superiority was obvious. The following are the results : BANTAM WEIGHT.
Flannigan (7.9) beat Clark, (8.1). Lousich (8.0) beat Ivells (8.1). Dudley (7.7) beat O’Driscoll (8.1). Dudley beat Lousich in the final, after an evenly contested bout, FEATHER AVEIGHT. McDonald (Blackball) beat Gray (Aliaura). McDonald met Pascoe (Greymouth( in tlie final, and won by a narrow margin. MIDDLE AVEIGHTS. Burns (Grey), 10.7, beat Garvey (Ru_ nanga) 10.9. This as a surprise to the spectators, the winner showing a clever style and a clean ducking ability.
HEAVY AVEIGHT. Garvey and Skilton (Blackball) met in the final, the former getting the decision after, a good display of footwork. LIGHT AVEIGHTS. Leacli (9.12), beat Lewis (9.2), and in the final Neilson (Blackball) beat Leach. WELTER .AVEIGHT. O’Donnell (Grey) 10.5, knocked out O’Connor (Hokitika) 10.6, in the ia«t round after a sensational contest. SPECIAL BOUTS. “Robbo” (Blackball) 9.7, v. “Rusty’ (AA’aiuta) 9.9. Six 3-minute rounds: The decision in favour of “Robbo” .was a fair one. “Emerald” (10.4) v. H. Long (10.6). Six 3-minute rounds. This coptest ended in a draw, both men showing a good knowledge pf defence and each finding it hard to i- nneet. Long was a greatly improved boxer, and the decision was favourably received
WILDE BEATS RUSSELL, JERSEY CITY, Feb. 23. Jimmy Wilde decisively beat Russell, the latter’s second throwing the towel into the ring in the seventh round, Wilde scoring a technical knock-out. The victor was superior in every minute of tile bout, and the last three rounds found Russell hardly able to protect himself against the attacks of the Welshman. The boxing experts were very pleased with Wilde’s display of skill and aggressiveness. '
