The bridging of the Little Waitaha river on the main South road continues to be one of the most urgent works for through traffic into South Westland. A quantity of hardwood timber was received lately from Australia, but has not turned out to expectations. It is hoped however, to make an early start with the work, and the north approach road is likely to be put in hand shortly. The Public Works Department has Parliamentary authority for the work.

A cricket match, Rimu versus Kanieri was played at' Rimu last Saturday which resulted in a draw. Rimu scored 124 runs and Kanieri 47 for the loss of 7 wickets. The chief scorers for Rimu were:—T. Carley 45, W. Knowles 14, M. Keenan 14, H. Craig 13, F. Willoughby 11, J. Boyd 11, the chief scorer for Kanieri being W. Owens, 24 not out. W. Knowles and T. Carley divided the bowling honours for Rimu and \\. Owens and J. Morris for Kanieri.

While in the Hari Hari district, Mr J. B. Thomson, -the Government Drainage engineer, inspected the works carried out on McLean’s farm to improve the drainage. Some remarkable results are being achieved, the cropping this year being proof of the results obtainable where the land is cultivated after getting the water away. The farm referred to is particularly well appointed, and the nature of the operations being successfully carried out arc an object lesson in the way of handling swamp land.

The work being carried out by the County Council at Hari Hari in clearing a lengthy section of La Fontaine Creek, is proceeding very satisfactorily. An upper section of the creek is being dealt with starting from a fall upwards. Several feet o(f fall to the stream have been gained by the clearing of the debris caught in the scrub and the blowing out of small weirs which have accumulated as a result of large trees blocking the water course. In places where the creek winds for some distance cuts are being put through. A very workmanlike job is being carried out under Mr T. Nolan, the County Roadman in charge.

The Public Works Department is carrying out some very needful protection work at the Little Wanganui river approach road, where the river has cut in already for a considerable distance. It will be a relief to the situation when the approaches at the proposed bridge site are put in, as these will assist also to control the main stream which will thereby he kept in a mid-channel, and save the present serious bank erosion. A contract has been let for the cutting of the local timber required for bridging this river-the longest open crossing at present- on the main road to Waiho Gorge.

Mr J. B. Thomson, Chief Drainage Engineer of the Dominion, visited In-ter-Wanganui district on Thursday, and on that day and Friday inspected the swamp lands of the locality. During Thursday the Upper La Fontaine swamp area was inspected, including the operations to dear La Fontane creek. Yesterday Lower "La Fontaine swamp area was inspected, Mr Thomson proceeding through to the river frontage. It is understood that Mr Thomson will report to the Hon Minister of Lauds, and it is not unlikely that a special Purvey will be made with the object of ascertaining necessary levels. Mr Thomson, also viewed the Mikonui Swamp area and levels with regard to drainage are likely to be taken m regard to this . locality also 'fhe La Fontaine soil is highly thong l of, and if the areas are made available for settlement, it is quite on the car s that the land will he made available for returned soldiers.

Frequent applications have been made bv various local authorities m the district for greater protection at railway • crossings, and m common with other local bodies the Greymouth Borough Council wrote to Hr T K. • Seddon, M.P., on the matter. Mr Beddon renlied that at the name time at which he received the Council’s letter on the matter he had received a letter from the County Council the subiect. He desired to state that he had brought the matter under the notice of the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, Minister for Railways, pointing out that m the town of Greymouth and on the Westland section of the railway there were many level crossings quite unprotected which contributed ns # was aptly stated as a death trap for the travelling public. The letter was received.
