THE WILY TURK

POWDER AND MATCH. fI.ONPOS TIMMS SKItVIOF —00PY11IGTIT) (Received this day at 9.20 a.m.) BERLIN, Feb. 22. A deputation of Turkish officers is visiting Berlin attempitng a secret intrigue against the Allies. They assert an insurrectionary movement in Asia Minor is completely consolidated, and exerts a powerful pressure on Constantinople where the authorities no longer consider the signatures to the peace as possible. It appears that the German Government replied it was unable at present to develop relations in Asia Minor. The press enjoined complete silence concerning the deputation’s movements.

SPEAKING HIS MIND. (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received this day at 8.40 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 22. Hon Mr Bryce, in an indignant article in the “Observer,” deals historically with Turkish misrule, barbarities, and broken promises of reform extending over eighty years. He declares that the permission to the Sultan to remain in Constantinople dis graces the victorious Allies. They have yet time to retract. It is up true that the Moslems regard the city i s sacred. The idea that the expulsion of the Sultan would offend a considerable section of India is grossly exag* <>erated. The lanl is' that Constantinople served for !H*ny lentim's ns a focus of intrigue and corruption m which scoundralism of two continents accumulated. It will continue the same under any form of Turkish occupation.
