} The Westland County Council is. call-1 ing for tenders for the supply of 1,900 cubic yards of gravel for Kokatalii road widening above Mr Whiley’s residence. A noticeable feature at the Kokatalii 1 sale yards yesterday was the decided | slump in calves and weaners. Not any one round' tlife ring appeared in need of this class of stock and only two or three lines of tile many submitted by the auctioneer were sold. Several farmers were heard to say -that they would not rear tlieir calves next season. The most of the buyers present were keen for big grown cattle.
An event of interest to debaters and impromptu speakers will take place next Tuesday -evening in St. Mary’s Club Rooms.' The local debating society lias recently been resuscitated, and a novel form of entertainment is promised for the opening night. Mr John A Rosewarne, Inspector of the Australian Provincial Assurance Asociation, who is a visitor to this town was approached by Mr J. P. Ward the President of the Club, and gladly consented to supply a subject for an impromptu speech and adjudicate on the merits of the competitors. M. Rosewarne was judge at the Christchurch competitions, and lias also adjudicated at Napier. Gisborne, and other towns. There will be no charge for admission and those interested are invited to attend. Several local enthusiasts have entered and Mr Ward will be pleased to receive the names of anyone who would like to com. pete. Mr J.
