ST MARY’S CLUB.

The* inaugural meeting of the Cathoic Club and Deabting Society was held ist evening in the St. Alary’s Club

Rooms, Hokitika. The purpose of the meeting was to elect officers and a committee to carry on the work of the Club. There was a fair attendance, both of old and intending members, and the work of the evening was quickly dispatched. Mr Neil Warren was elected to the Chair and presided in his usual capable manner. Mr Wormington, one of the members of the old Club outlined tho work of the Club in the past and wished the new Club every success in its undertaking. Mr Warren, another member of the old Club, addressed the meeting, giving some good advice and wishing the Club every success. The Rev. Dean Tubman then arose and after saying that he had had a great I deal of experience in such matters suggested that the Club should c ai*ry on a Debating and Literary Society. The proposal met with the approval of all present and it was decided to put the question into operation. Mr P. J. McCarthy ,who also has had experience in debating societies gave some sound advice on the manner in which a Debating and Literary Society should bo conducted.

The Rev. Dean Tubman was elected Patron and Spiritual Adviser. Air .T. P. Ward was elected President, and Mr Howe Vice-President. Air V. Toomey fras elected Secretary and Air P. \T. McCarthy Treasure]-. A strong committee was also elected to control the affairs of the Club. The meeting then terminated with a hearty .vote of thanks to the Chairman:

A hearty welcome is extended to all interested in the affairs of the Club and particularly to thoso interested in the formation of a Debating Society to attend any or all the meetings of the Society and take part in the debates. The noxt- meeting of the Club is fixed for Tuesday evening next at 8 p.m., when an impromptu debate, taking the form of a question box will be held.
