j (PUB HBSSS ASSOCIATION. —COFTttISJJTd ' PLEASANT RECOLLECTIONS. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 19. The Governor-General was entertained at dinner to-night by the officers of the Canterbury Military District. In the course of his response to the toast of his health, Lord Liverpool said: “I shall leave New Zealand with the happiest recollections of my associations with its military forces, feeling certain that should occasion again arise for a call to be made for its citizens to assist the Empire, its sons will nob be found wanting in coming forward and giving the maximum that was in their power to uphold the traditions handed down to them by their forefathers to maintain the honour of their race and flag.” GISBORNE DEVELOPMENT. GISBORNE, February 19. The Harbour Board Committee has passed a resolution that Mr William Ferguson, of Wellington, be requested to carry out the appointment of an engineering commission and the means for securing the necessary data to report to the board on harbour development and extension ; such work to be carried out as expeditiously and consistently as possible. The personnel of the commission, and its procedure is to be left entirely in the hands of Mr Ferguson.
FLOODS IN NORTH ISLAND. WELLINGTON, This Day. The first express from Auckland arrived this morning on time, though the flood water had inundated an extensive area near Hunteville, and at one place the earth about the sleepers was being washed away Workmen effected temporary repairs and the heavy train crept safely through the inundation. After the express passed it was noticed that the rails had sagged about six inches at a danger spot, but was evidently the cause of the flood waters subsiding. LEST WE FORGET.
