“A RICH MAN’S PLAYTHING.”
Marie Graudon is a worker in a New England oyster cannery when she meets “Iron” Lloyd, capitalist and tenement owner who comes to that town as a worker in one of his own canneries to escape the city and people an unfortunate love affair as caused him to detest. He becomes acquainted with Marie and their friendship grows into love. Marie tells him that if she had means she would fight the oppressive tenement lords and work for the good of the people. To test her Lloyd, whom she knows as Strange, has his lawyer transfer a fortune to her, claiming it is an old heritage. Marie goes to New York and does what she vowed she would do. She centers her light on Lloyd and his tenements. Ogden Deneau, Lloyd’s business rival, associates himself with Marie, claiming interest in her work but really to crush Lloyd. But Marie' also has old scores to settle with Deneau and in her plan to ruin both these financiers enlists Strange’s aid. Strange, or Lloyd, helps her gladly and on the evening of the day the great coup was to be made, meets her. He tells Marie Deneau is now a has been. When she , asks about Lloyd, he smiles and tells her lie couldn’t crush himself. Marie denounces Lloyd for making a dupe and puppet and drives him from her. Later, though, the girl repents, hears his explanation of the test and finally agrees to start life over again with him, a life not to be marred with sordid tene- ■ ments and finance.
Further adventures of “Stingaree,” the serial, will be screened; also a Fox comedy, “Oh, What a Knight,” and a Gazette will be included. This will be undoubtedly a fine programme. McLean’s renowned orchestra will render appropriate selections during, the presentations.
