Thoughts For The Times .
Making Democracy Safe
Democracy must be made safe for the world, and the surest way to bring this about is by a strong league of educated peoples. Educated democracies mean educated citizens, and every individual must there be given—nay, has a right to he given— the best possible chance of the highest education which he or she is capable. The progress and the preservation of the world depend.on the sound and true education of the people in it. Education is necessary to good government in a State; it is also necsesary to the happiness of the individuals comprising that State. Therefore in an ideal democracy a free national system of education must he demanded ; and, going a step further, we find that the true bond between State and State will he a bond of intellect, intelligence, and sympathy, by which each will get into harmony with the other, rather than a bjjiul based on any system of politics or economics. Tt seems to me that many agencies will work together to bring about this bond of union between man and between State and State, but one of the most potent of them will he the University. The University!—a place for all —not for the moneyed few, not for the few gifted with great brain power, but for all who are capable of entering its halls.
