HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE
-MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16th
The Committee met at 7 p.m. Present: Messrs A. Aitken (Cliir.), S. J. Preston, J. King, T. W. Bruce, W. E. Richards, D. Stevenson, Feddersen, W. 11. Shannon.
The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence approved. [INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Runanga and Brunner picnic committees asking usual 'arrangement's be made.—Received and attended to.
From L.' F. de Berry, authorising transfer of bank account in his’ name to that of tho Chairman;—Received and approved. From Canterbury Education Board regarding payment of water rate on school, residence and other buildings, and offering to pay Half the amount. —Received, and referred back stating the amount involved was larger than the Board calculated. The Committee agreed to pay £3 towards the sum due. *
From School Committee Association making, a special appeal for membership.—Received and laid oil the table. From Canterbury Education Board asking for payment of £IOO contribution promised from the local Committee.— Received; The Chairman explain, ed that £IOO had been sent already. Mr Stevenson said that the Committee had carried out its part of the agreement. '' W'V •
From Canterbury Education Board notifying Miss G. M. Aitken had been appointed to the school as from February 2nd- also forwarding Miss G. M. Aitken’s name as the most suitable applicant for the post of assistant. —Received and appointment confirmed. From same forwarding copy of Inspector’s report showing a. satisfactory [condition generally of the Hokitika school.—Received; and considered clause by clause. It was stated that it was not desirable to publish reports on schools which offered criticism of the teachers. The members discussed the report and two of the number took exception to the tone of the criticisms while other members thought the comment fair and commendable. It was resolved to hold the report over and meanitime the document would be passed round among members for pernsal and consideration. MISCELLANEOUS.
Accounts were passed for payment to the amount of £sl 8s 2d. Tile Secretary said £IOO subsidy had been received for the shelter sheds. It was resolved to visit the grounds and to fix the site for the sheds.
Mr King asked what had been done regarding the school excursion ? The opinion was expressed there bad been enough holidays and the matter dropped. Messrs Bruce and Richards were appointed visitors for the month. The meeting rose at 7.45. p.m.
