iI’EU CHESS ASSOCIATION. —COCVEKVHT.j SENSATION IN COURT. CLYDE, February 11. There was a sensational occurrence in the court at Cromwell this morning. When a young man named Kirkman was' being charged with forging and uttering he suddenly drew a razor and inflicted a fearful gash in his arm. He was seized by the constable, and tile Magistrate (Mr Mosley) rendered first aid; but the man was in a state of collapse when taken to the hospital. THE ISLAND TRADE COMMISSION. WELLINGTON, February 13. The Commission that is to enquire regarding trade between New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, consists of Messrs G. Elliott (Auckland), W. R. Pearson (Timaru), and T. Wilson (Wellington). The islands mentioned in the order of references are: Western Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The Commission is authorised to act jointly with any Commission appointed by the Governor of Fiji, and is given power to take evidence and cMI for documents within New Zealand. Its report is to be completed not later than May 31st, 1920. MAN STRANGLED. AUCKLAN, February 14. The dead body of a. middle-aged man was found to-day at Parnell Park, strangled with necktie, tied tightly round his throat. There were no means of' identifying deceased except that the name “W. H. Brooks” is engraved on his watch. A PECULIAR CASE. AUCKLAND, February 14. A wedding party were leaving a house in the city, when the police arrested the prospective bride on a charge of having insufficient means of support. 'She appeared in the Police Court, when it was stated that the prospective bridegroom was a man of good character, and that the couple were about to leave for Sydney, where the bride’s people lived. The Magistrate granted a remand for two weeks, if everything is satisfactory the charge will be withdrawn. The couple then left the court for the Registry. t DROWNING FATALITY. PALMERSTON, NORTH, Feb. 15. The body of the hoy® Allen Kelly drowned in the Manawatu River on Saturday was recovered to-day. During the searching operations the police discovered the body of a middle-aged man in the same spot as the boy fell in. Tile man had probably been in the water for three months or more. The body lias not been identified. SHOOTING FATALITY. Jean Macdonald, aged 20 years, belonging to Clifton was shooting rabbits on Saturday when she accidentally shot herself in the abdomen. She was operated on in the Southland Hospital, but died this morning.
