WELCOME TO REV DEAN TUBMAN.

A large crowd of parishioners of this Parish assembled in St Mary’s Club Rooms last evening to welcome Dean Tubman, the newly appointed parish priest of Hokitika. The Rev Dean has laid charge of the Timaru parish for a great number of years. Timaru was liis first parish, and his works there will speak to liis memory as long as New Zealand is a country. He lias now come to replace Father Clancy at Hokitika, and last evening a formal welcome was extended him. Mr YVm Jeffries presided, and on behalf of the parishioners extended a hearty West Coast welcome to the Dean. He coneluded liis address by wishing tlieii guest long life and happiness in the future to carry on bis good work. Rev Father Clancy also spoke, and in a jovial manner, wished Dean Tubman as happy a. time as he himself had spent in Hokitika. He could wish for no better successor than the Rev Dean.

Addresses of welcome were also given by Messrs F. Wormington and J. Cahill (Parishioners of Hokitika),. Mr J. S. Ward (St .Mary’s Club and Hibernian Society), Mr F. Groufskv (St. Mary’s choir) and Mr J. Hutchison (parishioners of Ivanieri). .

Dean Tubman in a, lengthy and happy speech thanked his new parishioners for their hearty welcome. He gave an interesting account of some of ;the works of the Timaru parish! in that parish he had spent the greater part of his life and he certainly could never forget it. (But the warm-heartedness displayed that evening made him feel quite contented to remain in Hokitika, and he felt convinced he had landed in a “nice soft spot.” He sympathised with Hokitika people in losing Father Clancy, (a close personal friend of his). He would wish that Father Clancy could remain with him, hut failing this we would took forward with pleasure to liis annual visit. Proceedings were brought to a close with musical honors to the guest of the evening. Later Father Clancy and Dean Tubman spent a pleasant hour, the one saying good bye to old friends, and the other meeting and making new ones.'
