EXPORT OF HIDES. WELLINGTON, February 10. Cabinet to-day considered the future policy of the Government regarding the embargo on the export of hides. The Prime Minister said afterwards that Cabinet had arrived at an understand, ing but had not yet reached the final stage in the settlement of the business. SUGAR, SUPPLIES. WELLINGTON, February 10. Tlio position in regard to sugar sup. plies is tlio same as it lias been for some time past, there being a. weekly importation of 1200 tons. The increased demand is caused by the jam-making season. A capable man has been placed in charge of the distribution, which for jam-making, is arranged according to the fruit growing capacity of the various districts. The problem has been made more difficult owing to the loss of the 5000-ton cargo some time ago, and the considerable increase -in the Dominion’s population during tho past 12 or 15 months.

NEW ZEALAND INSURANCE COMPANY. AUCKLAND, Feb. 11. The eighty-first annual meeting of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Ltd., was held to-day. The chairman 01 directors (Mr Henry Horton) referred to the increase in the company’s shares and the increase in the paid up capital. Those changes, he thought, would be of . benefit to the company, and already the shareholders had increased in number from 1040 to 1228.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Messrs A. M. Myers, Carr, and Charles Houghton were re-elected directors.

COAL CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Coal Conference yesterday afternoon mot under Hon. W. F. Massey’s eh airmanship. Committees were set up to deal with the different aspects of the questions at issue. The conference then adjourned till to-day. It is understood that when the Conference met, the coal owners broached the question of contract systems, desiring to clear the ground as soon as possible by a discussion, but the miners strongly opposed contracts, preferring the wages system. It is believed that further representatives on both sides may bo present to-day.
