ADDRESS-IN REPLY
A LABOUR AMENDMENT. (Received this day at 12.25 p.m) LONDON, Feb. 12.
In the Commons Mr Brace moved a Labour-amendment to the Address-in-Rcply regretting the absence of a proposal to nationalise the coal mines, on the San key majority report. Hon. Lloyd George replying, said that nationalisation was impossible without a bureaucracy. He contended it had not been shown that nationalisation was able to produce the excellent productive results attained, under private ownership. He ridiculed the idea that men worked-harder for the State thin in private interests, and referred to the unsatisfactory results of nationalisation in Bolshevik Russia, which. was leading to compulsory labour. Nationalisation would discourage the development of the mining industry, because the present risks frequently involving most considerable losses would not be undertaken under nationalisation. 55
LLOYD GEORGE’S SPEECH. (Received this day at 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 12
The “Daily Chronicle’’ which is the principal organ supporting Hon. Lloyd Ceorge interprets his speech as the first move in a new political struggle, which may greatly affect the parties. The speech gives the Coalitionist a definite lead, and'will probably heal the differences which have recently attracted attention. It will certainly rally the Unionist wing, the smaller policies which tended to divide the Coalitionists will disappear in the resistance of all round Nationalists and especially in the fight between constitutionalists and direct action.
