Tho expenditure amounts to £22,925. naval appointment. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister of Defence has received advice that Captain Hall-Thompson, late Naval Advisor to the New Zealand Government, has been appointed to the command of the battleship Erin, one of the latest 25,000 ton additions to the British Navy.
SEAMEN’S AGREEMENT. DUNEDIN, This Day. It. is understood that the wages embodied in the new seamen’s agreement are based on tho Australian rates, as follows:—A,B„ £l4 per calendar month; A.B employed as lamp-trim-mer, £ls; O.S. under 18 years, £8; over 18 years, £8 ss; boatswain, £ls; trimmer, £l4; greaser Or fireman, £l6; fireman-greaser on vessels carrying one engineer only, £l6 10s; donkeyman, £l7; storekeeper, £l6. Under the clause, ordinary seamen, 21 years of age and over, are treated as able seamen.
ATTEMPTED MURDER. WELLINGTON, This Day
Aubrey Ibell, aged seventeen, was committed for trial on a charge of attempting to murder Wm. Murphy and his son, John Murphy at Island Bay on January 22nd.
Two charges of theft were also preferred against Ibelb Murphy’s evidence showed that he gave Ibell a home while the latter was looking for employment. On returning home on January 22nd, witness found some of his belongings in Ibell’s portmanteau. Ibell admitted stealing these, and was taken to the police station Later, when Murphy and Ins son went to get tea, they found poison had been put in some meat. This poison, had been taken from a box where it was kept under lock and l'°> ■ The poison was used by Murphy, senr., in the course of his work as rat-catcher about the city.
