Business syndicates are steadily buying up 'Lancashire spinning mills, of ■which six involving . several millions sterling were sold yesterday at 'an averI age of five times the original capital. There is a similar tendency towards combination observable in regard to retail prices, particularly West End drapery firms. Debenham recently absorbed Harvey Nichols together with Marshall and Snelgrove. The new company has a capital of 8 millions. Harrods to-day provisionally arranged to purchase Swan Edgars in Piccadilly Circus. It is considered one of the finest sites in the world. Owing to numerous burglaries, insurance companies are heavily increasing the premiums on shops and warehouses, especially textiles, and are refusing to insure the clothing trade, ‘unless a watchman is guarding the premises. The “National News” states that Government have given a contract for large supplies of nickel for coinage for replacing silver and bronze. COUNCIL AND EXCHANGE. The Supreme Economic Council is calling an urgent meeting of Finance Ministers of Britain, France, Italy and Belgium, to consider the problem of international exchange. The Council desires to encourage trade with co-ope-rative Associations in Russia, but is still opposed to recognition of the Soviet.

A curious prosecution is proceeding ' of six Newcastle food officials charged ' with wasting 1325 carcases of Australian meat, received in July 1919, which was unreasonably tretaiined until September, when it was unfit for food. The accused include a local livestock commissioner, the area meat agent and members of the meat distribution com--1 mittee under the Food Controller. The cose was adjourned.

There are 210 vessels at present in the port of London, and fifteen aggregating sixty-two thousand tons are in the river awaiting an opportunity to enter dock.
