A resolution was adopted by the Melbourne Anglican Synod deploring the growing tendency to secularise Sunday, but at the same time reminding church people that there was nothing inconsistent with Christian principles in physical and social recreation on tile Lord’s Day, provided that such recreation is subordinated to the primary claims of Divine worship. , The resolution led to much newspaper controversy for and against. A poll taken by Teipqra ratepayers strongly- favoured -Sunday sport. Two “Sabbatli" observance”, Alderman were defeated.

A violent storm swept the northern seaboard and destroyed half the tO"p of.Chillagee, and interfered with the telephone network, causing the isolation of Cairns.
VICTORIAN POLITICS. MELBOURNE, Feb 4. ill- Poynton has been appointed Minister of Home Affairs and Territories; M r Wise, Postmaster General; and Messrs Ryrie and Laird Smith, Honorary Ministers. Mr Rvrie will probably become Assistant Minister of Defence. Mr H. E. Starke has been appointed to the High Court Bench, in succession to,Sir E. Barton.

A LABOR SETBACK. (Received this day at 1.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Feb, 4. The municipal elections under the hew local Government. Act instead 01, as anticipated in some quarters, showing a revolutionary trend, resulted if anything oppositely, as labour did not gain ground as anticipated, and in such strongholds as Broken Hill, Lithgou, Mnrrickville and Newtown .received a decided setback. At Broken Hill where tbe Council formerly was wholly labour, not a single endorsed labour candidate was returned.
