THE REFEREE TROUBLE

CHRJSTCHRRCH. January 30. At a meeting of Itlio executive of the New Zealand Hockey Association it was reported that the replies of the' associations, regarding the proposed visit of tlie Nfew South "Wales team, were yery satisfactory. A lengthy discussion took place, arising out of a latter, from the Auckland association, concerning the trouble with Canterbury over Kent’s refereeing in a recent shield match. Tho Chairman (Mr H. S. Goodman) stated that he had arranged a conference between Mr Norden (Auckland), and Mr Simpson (Canterbury), at which a lot of the misunderstanding had been cleared up. .The position, briefly put, as jj result of the conference, was that, if the executive wrote to Auckland that Canterbury, having withdrawn its resolution directing Auckland to withdraw its motion in the matter of refusing to play the trouble would probably be syttlcjd. Mr G. S. Cpwper said lie thought this unsuitable as it made Canterbury look small. It appeared that Canterbury would take directions from tlio jpx,ecujfcive, while Auckland refused to do so. Get ps settle the matter now we have the opportunity.” In reply to a question the chairman stated that if Auckland refused to .accept the proposal and to play the Canterbury rules as provided, it must forfeit the shield- , On the motion of Mr R . Browning, it was decided to rescind the resolution directing Auckland to rescind the resolution that that body had passed it ■being presumed that Auckland would at Gee same time w W out thie resolution p,pncorning their refusal to play Canteif) Mr Cowpey wa-s the only dissentient.
