A meeting of medical practitioners passed a resolution pointing out it was unwise and risky for people to congregate in large ■ numbers Indoors; also that while they do not propose the immediate postponement of next week’s carnival they mnke*ivrong representaions to the Department ”of Public Health that if matters show any signs of becoming serious within the next few days, the Department should not hesitate to take steps to effect such a postponement.
A SUDDEN DEATH. DUNEDIN, This O.iy A tragedy marred the opening pf the Otago University Jubilee celebrations to-day. When reading one of the scripture lessons at the opening service in first Church, Professor Gilray. the senior professor, suddenly collapsed over the reading desk, and died, almost before lie could be removed to an anteroom. Gilray was appointed professor of English in 1890.
AN UNFORTUNATE WOMAN
AUCKLAND, This Day.
At the Supreme Court, Constance Elizabeth Parsonage was charged with manslaughter of her infant child, that was drowned in a creek at Pokino I’lie evidence showed that the home was destroyed by fire, and a few days later the woman and child were found in the creek, the child being drowned. The woman’s mind was affected probably by the fire, and she did not realise what she had done. A verdict was wv turned of “not guilty.” on the ground that the woman was insane at the time fb'e act was committed. She was acquitted and ordered to remain m custody.
