.THE L’REMU#t IN REPLY. WELLINGTON, This Day. Replying yesterday to a deputation of Wairarapa farmers, Premier Massey said the people looked far too much to Government to do-things for them. If a man wanted a pound of sugar he telegraphed to the Prime Minister to know whether it could be sent to him by post. It is much the same with the people and coal. Government was becoming a tragic concern. He did not think there need be any /anxiety for some time regarding coal. As to sugar, the refining company’s works at Auckland were working night
and day. Members of the deputation asked it Mr Massey thought bolding was going on, and ancl he (Mr Massey) replied: “I do. I can’t aeeount-for it.in any other way. The Auckland concern, is turning out 1000 tons weekly. He hoped the strike in Fiji, which was serious, would not affect the sugar position. THE COAL SHORTAGE. AUCKLAND, Jan. 29. Owing to the coal shortage, the City Council has decided to curtail the train service from Saturday. Their small coal reserves are rapidly diminishing, and it was found that the cut was necessarv immediately. Later it was decic - ed to reduce the services to-morrow. The reduction involves the cutting out of the services on the hills, thus creating. gaps in every service. One third of the staff on the tramway will be temporarily suspended. One third of the men are standing down each week.
