8799 CASES IN NEW YORK

There are an additional 2,855 cases of influenza throughout the city making a total of i 8790 since Saturday. The Health Department is so heavily taxed that sixty appeals which came during the day, were unanswered. Every avail able nurse throughout the city has been appealed to.
PRECAUTIONS URGED. . (Received This Day at 8 a.m.) , ‘ LONDON, Jan. 27. The Ministry of Health states there are no present indications of an influenza epidemic in Britain, but there is considerable probability of it in view of its recrudescence in America, Japan and Poland. The department urges the greatest precautions.
A WARNING FOR CARE. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 27. Reports show the prevalence of a mild form of influenza at present in Auckland, Nelson and Wellington. Dr Chesson, District Health Officer, owing to this fact, mentioned to a reporter to-night the possibility of the infection being brought south through the coming of pupils to boarding schools in the South Island.
He makes the suggestion that the headmasters of hoarding ' schools in Canterbury and North Island and Nelson to advise pupils to postpone their return to school for the present. Perhaps in a week or so the position might he sufficiently improved, in Dr Chesson’s opinion, to make it safe to dispense with the measure of safety.
FIGHTING THE DISEASE.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 26
The Senate has passed a resolution to provide $50,000 to study the causes and prevention, and cure of influenza. Public health services and colleges having suitable research facilities will be given the funds to carry on the study. It is expected that the House will approve. There have been a thousand deaths since January. , There are ten thousand cases at Chicago.
