It is not proposed at once to develop a series ol services to co\ei the whole country, but n. number of services will be tried, and if they prove a success the scheme may lie enlarged. In the course of a day or two a schedule should he issued.
THE SUGAR SHORTAGE. WELLINGTON, This Day. The sugar shortage lias reached another stage in Wellington, which has led to one of tlio largest confectionery manufacturing concerns in the c it.v suspending operations in some departments. Other manufacturers are facing a similar position. Hon. W. F. Massey stated last night that the matter was one for the Board of Trade to deal with. He hoped the worst phase of the shortage was over. The Sugar Refining Company’s works at Auckland were working at full capacity, producing over 200 tons daily. Tile Board of Trade were now in Auckland, endeavouring to make arrangements for the distribution to the-best advantage of all concerned,

RAILWAY ENQUIRY. WELLINGTON, This Day. At to-day’s sitting of the Railway Inquiry Board, J. MacDonald, assistant general manager of railways replied at length to the case presented by the Amalgamated Society of Railway servants. He submitted the rate of pay compared more than favourably with those in adjacent states. The demands claimed by the society would entail an extra expenditure of £1,000,000. Referring to the allegation that an unusually large number of men were leaving the servide ,he said the experience of the Department was that Of other employers, that since the war many men had become restless and were changing their occupations. A DONATION. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Dr. Fox, medical superintendent of the Christchurch Hospital, has sent the chairman of the Hospitals Board, a cheque for £IOO, as a. first donation for the fund to establish a travelling scholarship for Christchurch Hospital nurses and others.
