(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright, AMERICA AND TREATY. WASHINGTON, Jan. 23. Senator Lodge has announced that a “compromise conference” has reached a virtual agreement on Clause Ten. It is now felt that many difficulties attendant on effecting a compromise will quickly disappear, since the major problems are solved.

Mr Taft is now actively promoting senatorial negotiations in reference to getting the Peace Treaty ratified. He points out that eighty of the Senators favour some form of ratification. Of these .forty favour the full reservations. Article Ten, lie says, is the crux of the President Wilson says he believes it is fundamental, but Mr Taft says he sees no reason why there should not be a compromise over Article Ten in view of the fact that it is unlikely to be invoked, owing to the existence of Articles Sixteen and Seventeen.
