Mr Massey has received advice from the Imperial Government that it will not purchase any more frozen meat after June 30th next. Regarding wool and dairy purchase a reply will be sent by the Imperial authorities as soon as possible. BIR DAVID HUTCHINS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 22. Among the New Year honours conferred” by the King is the title of Knight Bachelor given to David. Ernest Hutchins, F.R.G.S., in recognition of Ills services to forestry in the Empire. Sir David Hutchins is at present resident at Khanliallab, and has been engaged for some time in preparing a valuable report for the Government upon forestry in New Zealand. He had previously rendered distinguished service to the Governments of India, South Africa, and Australia, in matters relating to forestry.
„ ATHLETICS. MASTER-TON, January 22. The members of the athletic team that is proceeding to Australia competed at the annual sports meeting of tho Wairarapa Athletic Club to-day. A. AV. Dormer ivon the 880yds Handicap from scratch in 2min 1 1-oth sec; Munro won the putting the shot event with a put of 42ft ll)in, and throwing the hammer with 119 ft; G. HarveJ- was successful in the pole vault with 10ft 7iu, and subsequently made an exhibition vault of lift; A. AVyeth won the one mile and three mile handicaps: ,A. B. Sievwright was second in the mile walk. Victoria University won the relay race.
AVELCOMjE RAIN IN AUCKLAND. v AUCKLAND, January 23. The dry spell which has prevailed since the middle of October has been broken, steady rain setting in about nine 6’clock this morning. In tw r elve hours one inch has fallen, this being the first occasion since October that this figure has been recorded. The rain continues this evening.
y CHARGE OF ARSON. DUNEDIN, Jan. 23. At. the Police bourt to-day, Richard Hampden McLennan was charged with wilfully setting fire to a substance likely to set the Grand Hotel on fire. It was stated in evidence that tlie accused threw some matches amongstluattresscs in tlie cellar. The manager of the hotel said that similar fires had occurred on his premisses on three occasions. The accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed for trial.
AUCKLAND TRAMWAYS.,. AUCKLAND, Jan. 23. The Mayor states that the amount involved in the purchase of the tramways by the city totals £1,229,462. It was decided by the City Council to au r thorise the issue of debentures under the Tramway Loan totalling £1,250,600 and maturing in 1940. The Council’s share of the profit's in the last year of the company’s ownership totalled £3885, a deduction from £5030 for the previous year, due to loss during the epidemic.
TOOK POISON. AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. Samuel John Ilateliffe, aged 45, married, but living apart from his wife, drank a liquid from a flask yesterday. He collapsed, and died later in the hospital. The inquest was adjourned to enable an analysis of the remainder of tlie contents of the flask to be made. He had told his brother that he intended to poison himself, but as he had' previously made a similar threat, no notice was taken of the statement. TFatality. HAWERA, Jan. 22. Warrick Winstone Foy, the twelve-year-old son of Mr James Foy, solicitor, met with an accident yesterday afternoon, which terminated fatally. He was driving a hay-rake on a farm where he was on holiday, during hay-making operations, when the horse shied, 'through some hay falling, and bolted. Foy was removed to the Hawera Hospital, where he died soon after admission.
