N.Z UNIVERSITY

MEETING OF SENATE. DUNEDIN, Jan. 21. At the session of the Senate of the New Zealand University, it was resolved, on the motion of Professor Segar, “ that Senate record its deep regret at tho premature death of Professor R. C. Maelaurin, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a distinguished graduate of this University, and desire to convey to his relatives the assurance of their deep sympathy.” Matters involved in the Chancellor’s report were then considered by the ■Senate.

On the motion of Dr Anderson, seconded by Professor J. Macmillan Brown, it was 'decided that consideration of that section of the report relating to the Board of Studies he defered to a later opportunity. It was decided that the matter of organisation of the Wellington office be referred to a. committee to be hereafter nominated.

It was resolved that the committee on Concessions to Soldiers be continued till the April meeting, and that they he requested to report as to whether further concessions should he granted. Professor Hight took exception to the paragraph in the report describing as generous the increases in the Government grants to the University. In . view of the fact that the Universityhad applied for considerably more, and that Senate urgently required £SOOO for its own immediate needs, the grant could not fie looked upon as generous, he said.

It was pointed out that the paragraph was an expression of opinion by the Chancellor, and was not necessarily the opinion of Senate. Mr J. W. Joynt and Professor Rutherford were appointed to represent tlie New Zealand University at the congress of the ,Universities of the Empire to be held tills year. The Macmillan Brown Prize Committee announced the subject for the next competition, viz., “ That it is only with renunciation that life, properly speaking, begins.” The Chancellor read a cable message from the Secretary of the Commissioners of the 1851 Exhibition Science Research Scholarsfiip, asking for a nomination for such scholarship. The matter was subsequently referred to the Arts and Commerce Committee.
