COLERIDGE ELECTRIC SUPPLY. CHRISTCHURCH, dan. 12. The long-hoped-tor 50 per cent i»-<-rense in the amount of electric current available from Lake Coleridge supply lias come a step nearer in. AVHen Lake Coleridge was harnessed in the first place preliminary provision was made for « supply of 16,000 h.p., but only 8 000 h.p was provided at the commencement. Then early in the war period orders were placed for the necessary irenerating -machinery and pipe line's for the provision of a further 4,000 h.p. ‘ The turbine for that third pipe line is now in place, and the balance of the generation machinery is on the water, but the pipes' have not yet been shipped. However, a cable, gram has now been received from the Hig i Commissioner stating- that the manufacturing firm in Glasgow hope to have the pipes completed by March. In that case, and always providing that shipping is available, tlie last of the material should be landed here-by the beginning of winter; but probably it will be the end of this year before the current is through .to Christchurch. No additional transmission lines will be required. For mouths ■ past the Public Works Department lias been refusing applications for current, so that tlieie is not likely to be a surplus for any lengthy period after the new supply is available. Tenders are now being prepared for the supply of pipes and machinery to bring the supply up to the >ull 16.000 h.p., and tlie probability is that the second extra 1,000 h.p. will follow very closely after the first.
