The- Sapphire, which was launched in 1904 and completed in 1905, is a vessel of 3000 tons displacement, 309 feet in length, 40 feet I tea m, and h draught of 14ft G in. She is propelled by engines of 10.200 horse-' power, T}ri\T»g' l wjii-f-crews. giving her a speed of 22 knots. Some time ago it was announced that the Admiralty had presented a light cruiser to New Zc-n)aijd. This was H.M.S. Canterbury, u ’thoroughly up-to-date ship of her class, but as there is as yet, no provision for oil-burning ships in New Zealand waters, it was decided to secure a coal-burning ship in the meantime, lienee the selection of the Sapphire.
