SOUTHERN FLOOD DAMAGE.
REPORT REGARDING DRY CREEK. Mr Seddon, M.P. has received the following letter from the Minister of Public Works regarding matters affecting the erosion caused by Dry Creek on the Main South Road:— « i have obtained a report as promised in my letter of 11th October last, regarding flooding by Dry Creek in South Westland. ' "The Resident Engineer states that this is a mountain torrent which is dry in fine weather ,and that its bed is as' high as the adjoining lands, and even higher at some points. It carries large quantities of shingle, and is practically uncontrollable when in
“Regarding prevention of flooding, tlm Resident Engineer expresses the opinion that your enquiry probably relates to the northern bank immediately above the road crossing, where the bank is very low and the erdek overflows with every fresh. For your information I have to state that an engineering survey has recently been made at a site for a bridge on the Mam South Road at this spot, The Resident Engineer has prepared.plans of a bridge, an ' protective works will have to he con- ’ structed to secure the bridge J damage by floods. These works w.U also protect the land in' the immedia * vicinity of the bridge, but a scheme of 5 protection for the whole of the proper 5 tL which are affected by flood waters 5 aloim the course of the stream, Mould ' cost "considerably more than the van ‘ of the land affected.”
