THE CHURCHES MESSAGE.

A NEW YEAR REQUEST. (By Electric Telegraph—Co weight.; (Australian «fe N.Z. Cable Association)

LONDON, Jan. 10. The Archbishop of Canterbury and York, Revs. F. B. Meyer, (Baptist) Scott Lidgett (Methodist), J. Shakespeare (Secretary of Baptist Union), and A. Guttery, as leaders of the churches of all demoninations have issued a New Year’s message, based on the appeal by Hon. Lloyd George, and the Prime Ministers of the self-governing dominions, that efforts for bettering the world should not be based merely on

material things. The message says:—“The Prime Minister’s appeal is the utterance of a statesman who has had experience of the arbitrament of war. Tests of re-bui!d ing the life of peace are to seek, first, the Kingdom of God. His righteousness means the testing of all our. action, social, industrial and international, bv the standard of His teaching. Wo put before professing Christians this three-fold call. Firstly—To rededicate ourselves to Christ’s active service. Secondly—ln combating the impulse to more selfish gain we should test actions by Christian standards. Thirdly—We should unite in prayer, counsel and action so that our common Christian citizenship may become the foremost power of the national life.
