1 aUS'IKALIAN ifc N.Z. CAUCE ASSOCIATION J SEVEN LIVES LOST. NEWCASTLE, December 24. Between 1 aind 12 o’clock in the afternoon 'the .motor launch ScoUcii Queen, owned by AD - David Gordon, of Hamilton, capsized in the Swansea entrance, and seven men are supposed to have been drowned.

There were ten men in the boat, and the three who were saved were too exhausted to give any particulars of the disaster.

The party was on a fishing excursion, and when in the entrance to Lake Macquarie at Swansea, the tide at ebb with a strong north-east wind blowing, the little craft was caught in the rip. Hwt jenginies suddenly stopped, and she appears to have fallen to pieces The whole party was precipitated into the water, and although aid went to them only three were saved.

They are: —Thomas Plummer, of Urownstreet, Newcastle; James Dooley, of Morgan street, Mereweatlier; and Thomas Stanton, of Bfoadmeadow road, Hamilton. Stauten was; taken to the Newcastle Hospital, while Plummer and Dooley acre conveyed home, suffering from lae eft eels ot their adventure, but are not critically ill.

'The missing men, all supposed to be drowned, are: —David Gordon, owner of the launch; Thomas Dick, Merewether; John Strong, Aamstown; Peter McCall, Newcastle; Alex. McCall, Newcastle; John Rose, Newcastle.

SYDNEY ITEMS. SYDNEY, Jan. 5. Owing to the increased railway freights being now imposed at the beginning of the New Year, in N.S.W. the Hoekins Lithgow ironworks have stopped. This renders idle 750 employees. The N.S.W. Railway Commissioners are considering a readjustment of freights to certain firms. Failing which the firms state thousands will be rendered idle by stoppage of work as at Lithgow ironworks. s Mr Duncan has won the second New South Wales Senate seat and it appears to be certain that Mr Gardiner (Labour) will win the third upsetting earlier Nationalist calculations. There have been further torrential rains in the coastal highland districts. The inland districts have benefitted to a less extent.

Owing to the arrival of inter-Stnto shipments, the price of potatoes to-day dropped two pounds per ton.
