Asked if Gilrutli’s first policy was not farming and closer settlement, witness said he found thp policy already made and lie had to carry it out. As a result the Daly River River Government Settlement was established. Asked if when Vesteys started operations, the Administrator changed his policy, witness denied such was the case,
He was then asked if Gilruth and a. man named Pal Mer took up three thousand acres at Daly River, because it was the key to the position and Gilruth desired to push the settlers out. Witness said “no,” other lots were available, hut lio one took them tip. Questioned regarding the payment of Certain moneys to Palmer and Gilruth when their partnership in the lease was dissolved, Carey denied that the alleged dissolution was a mere blind and stated Gilruth held half a share in a lease which was issued in the name of Palmer. , ~ Asked why Gilruth did not issue the lease to Palmer and Gilruth, witness replied that as far as the Land .Board was concerned it dealt with Painter only. - • , Asked if Palmer did not get special conditions, Carey said “no,” except that the rent was five pounds h'B! ,er fhaj} for the other blocks*.
