WESTLAND RACING CLUB.

BOXING DAY MEETING

The Westland Racing Club opens its midsummer meeting on Boxing Day, (Friday). This season the local dub has the opportunity of leading-off in the West Coast racing carnival. Hitherto for many years past, the Club has wound up the carnival. On the present occasion the Reofton Club elected to give up the Christmas dates, and the local dub promptly stepped into the breach. The Westland Club has grown in popularity of late years, and it has endeavoured’ to maintain its good name by catering generously for patrons. The Club has kept up its stakes well, and set the fashion this year by instituting hurdle events. The course and appointments have been improved out of all knowledge since th|o early days of the struggle to keep things going here. The appointments are excellent, and are equal to the equipment of the best appointed courses. The buildings are in first class order, and the convenience and comfort of patrons have been well catered for. The galloping track is in first-rate trim, reflecting the fullest credit on the caretaker, Mr O. Fowler. The whole grounds and the condition of the appointments are a credit to his attentive work. During the year a considerable amount of drainage and ornamentation work has been carried out, and visitors to the course will find a very promising outlook in the matter of the tree plantations. For the meeting on Friday, the Club has everything in first-class condition. The local Band will be in attendance and render a special programme, subsequent to parading the town. The Chib is extending its usual courtesy to ladies, who will be admitted free. Returned soldiers may obtain passes on application to Sergfc.-Major Solomon. The usual privileges will he run by various caterers, and the toalisator will be undeii the conduct of Mr. H. Lynch. The cards for the races are n»w on sale. The fields promise to be good, and the sport should he attractive.
