j CREATORS OF INDUSTRY. ' Talkers on Industrial Subjects pay too little Attention to Practical Experience. They abuse or ignore the Creator of Industries for the Employment of Labour—the Inventor of Machinery to lighten the Work of Labour—the . Organiser—the Manager—the Designer—the Salesman —the Advertiser. Such as these are the brains of Industry. They constitute the third Great Partner with which Capital and Labour must pp-ppprnjbe. “Peace on! Earth; good-will to men.”
Members of the local Band will meet at the band room at 11.30 this evening for the purpose of caroling. To-morrow (Xmas Day) there will be the special Christmas services in All Saint’s Church. At the evening service the choir will render Xmas anthems, and a selection of carols. A quartette party from the All Saint’s choir will journey to Kumara in the afternoon to render carols at the service there.
At-the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth yesterday morning, before Messers Jas Ring and Jos. McLean J.P’s Thomas Collings, charged with attempting to unlawfully supply a noxious article was further remanded to December 30. A charge of doing wilful damage to the Wesley Hall against Connor, was adjourned,to Jan. 26th.
Word was received to-day of a serious accident to Miss Ida M. (“Cissy”) Winchester of the Bank of New Zealand staff, Grey mouth. It appears that while motor cycling last evening. Miss Winchester had a bad fall, and received somewhat serious injuries. She was removed to the Hospital at Greymoutli where she is progressing as well as can be expected. Her parents, Mr and Mrs Winchester of Ross, were summoned north, and went through to Greymouth by motor to-day. News was received to-day that Mr Sydney Westbrook was accidentally drowned at Wanganui yesterday. The deceased was a son of Mr Westbrook, formerly of Humphreys and Hokitika, and is a brother of 1 Mr Wynne Westbrook of Revell St. He was married and leaves a wife and one child, the wife being, a sister of Mrs C. Gibbous. Deceased was for many years in businer*; in Hokitika as a fruiterer and for some twelve years has been in the employ of the Wanganui Harbor Board. *
The Finance Committee of the Westland County Council met yesterday afternoon, and passed accounts for December to the amount of £687 12s 6d. One tender received for Ivokatahi bridge repairs (labor only) was declined, and the matter referred back to the Overseer to make the best arrangements he could to push on the work after- the holidays. A vote of £25 was granted for clearing White Creek, Ivokatahi, subject to the settlers affected making a contribution also. Repairs to Pigeon Creek overflow, Whitcombe Road, were authorised. A £ for £ grant was offered to extend a short distance of road to Smith Bros sawmill, Ivoiterangi. The Overseer’s recommendations to improve Ruatapu-Beach road were approved. A vote was passed for road drainage below Herepo. Improvements to Waitalia road were authorised. Overseer Millner was requested to proceed to the North Island next month to inspect and suggest the selection of suitable road making and repairing machinery for this County. The' question of establishing a public pound at Kanieri was referred to the Council. Proposals for expenditure of Government grants were reported to be Well forward, and would be submitted as soon ns possible.
