The General Elections.

Pronounced Reform Victory. Government Clear Majority. Several Notable Defeats. Including Liberal Leader. Labor Slight Gain.

minion. The first assured return was ] the Member for a Westland, and at 7.45. o’clock Mr Seddon returned his thanks .to the assemblage which numbered a few hundred people. The defeat of the Hon. G. W. Russell and Mr H. Holland (ex-Mayor of Christchurch) was the first outside news received. The Labor victories at these two points was received by a section of the crowd with mild applause. Thereafter the returns began to come in steadily. The news of the defeat of Sir Joseph Ward, the liberal leader, was received with many expressions of regret. His loss in the councils of the State will be missed very greatly. No member had a dearer grasp of the finances of the Dominion than. Sir Joseph, who had always been careful to build up a sound financial position. The defeat of Sir James Carroll was regretted also, and Hon. G. W. Russell is another member of wide parliamentary experience, whose absence will be missed. The results were posted up to 12.30. a.m., a large number of people remaining till “lights out.” For some unexplained reason, Mr Massey’s re-election did not come through last night but it was not deemed to be in doubt. At the closing down hour last night it was seen that the Reform Government had a substantial win. Further figures came to hand to-day and the new House will be practically Reform Party 50, all other parties 30. The Government therefore has the ball at its feet to carry out the ‘‘sane progressive policy” of twenty-eight points, outlined by the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, P.C., in October last.

The General Elections yesterday proceeded vary quietly. Locally the con- j test was voted the quietest on record. The polling was well up to the average indicating a very good percentage, especially when it is remembered that the usual contingent of votes from the country; were not to he seen about. ” Several motor cars plying in the interests of all the parties affected by the polls, were running .throughout the day, and this facilitated the polling considerably. There Was never any congestion at the booths* and the proceedings were marked by perfect orderliness. Mr J. N. Nalder had made most complete arrangements for the poll, and the Electoral Department had a most efficient officer directing the proceedings on their -behalf. The staff of deputies was also very capable, and the promptitude, with which the returns came in after 6 o’clock was very commendable. In this connection the deputy at the Arahura polling booth (Mr J. P. Ward) must have put up something of a record as at 6.15. o’clock the result of the voting for both polls was notified outside the “Guardian” Office. This return by the way gave a general indication of the ultimate result for West land. About 6.30. the public began to congregate outside the office of this paper, where complete arrangements had been made for displaying Ihe full results for both Islands. A series of blackboards were provided), and when the shadows began ,to fall, the outside of the office was lit up by electric light, and a good view was obtained of the progress of the contests all over the Do-

up a magnificent fight. If Labor hung together they would put up a bigger fight next time. He urged every support be' given the Labor propaganda and next times they would have greater support. No party had greater love for their country than the workers. A lot had been said of patriotism, but : the best of patriotism came from La- | bor. They never stood for disloyalty. He,also desired to thank the Returning Officer for his kindness throughout the contest. At the call of Mr Warren, cheers were given for Mr Seddon and also for Mr O’Brien. CANDIDATES AT GREYMOUTH. (Grey Argus.) At the picture interval at the Greymouth Town Hall last evening, Messrs Seddon and O’Brien took the platform simultaneously, and shook hands to the accompaniement of cheers from the large audience. Mr Seddon said that he took the opportunity of thanking the electors of Westland for the very handsome majority they had returned him by. He desired specially to thank those ladies' and gentlemen who had worked so loyally in his interests. He paid a splendid tribute to Mr O’Brien for the gentlemanly and sportsmanlike way in which he had conducted the campaign. Hje was pleased to take Mr O’Brien by the hand, and trusted that all would sink their little differences and unite and work for the good of the country and the Coast in particular. In conclusion, he called for three hearty cheers for Mr O’Brien, which were lustily given. Mr O’Brien also returned thanks to those who had supported him, and also to his opponents. Notwithstanding that he had been defeated, he had achieved a magnificent result for Labour in Westland, by polling more than 2600 votes. He referred to the clean fight put up by his opponent, and to tha magnificent reception which had been tendered to him from one end of the Coast to the other by the supporters of Mr Seddon, and said that no electorate could be fairer from a Labour point of 1 view than Westland. Along with Mr Seddon he trusted that all would combine and work together for the good of the country and the West Coast in particular, and he mentioned that if those who voted for Labour would stick together they would at some future data reduce Mr Seddon’s majority. Before leaving the platform, both 'gentleman again shook hands, and were cheered to the echo. 1914 Poll.—Seddon 3236 ; Paape 2410, total 5646. 1919 Poll.—Seddon, 4070; O’Brien, 2653; total, 6723.
