LATE LOCALS.
Mr Tom Pollard has earned great kudos in Nelson for his production of the opera “Paul Jones.” A pleasant ceremony took place yesterday afternoon, when Miss M. Duncan, of South Spit, was united in holy matrimony to George Steele, of Ivoiterangi, by the Rev. P. B. Fraser. The bride was attended by Miss Holley as bridesmaid. An Exchange says that the steeple-, , chaser Arlington, who has been trained at Miramar for some time, is jumping particularly well in his schooling work. He is to do the West Coast meetings, find probably will he ridden by W. Bowden. The Borough authorities have fenced off the eastern portion of Cass Square and closed the entrance gates near the gas-works. The eastern portion of the Square is, therefore, not available to pedestrian traffic. As at October 31st last, the number of old age pensioners was 19,840, representing £734,080 a year ; the number of widows’ pensions was 3464, representing £120,880; and the number of military pensions 979, representing £44,942 a year. The amount actually paid in pensions during tlu* year was £874,324. The Hon, W. F. Massey replying to the resolution of the Ruatapu meeting of last week has replied as follows: “Your telegram lleOeived. Transmitting copy of motion carried at meeting in connection with fatal ’ accident at Ngahere railway crossing. I regret exceedingly to learn of the ,sad fatality and representations contained in vour telegram will have earnest consideration.” Owing to some fault having occurred in the “Guardian” telephone line during the last few days, very great diffi- . cultv has been met with and wb have to apologise to those not receiving attention owing to this cause. The local telephone repair men have been busily engaged testing for the fault and it is now surmised that the fault is in the buried cable,
